Since 2017 he has also co-owned and co-operated Shalem Hospice Care with Ms. John.\n \nMatt Sawyer will discuss issues related to end-of-life care, focusing on hospice. He will discuss powers of attorney and directives to physicians from the nuts-and-bolts angle of how they apply in a hospice setting. He will also introduce the concept of hospice to the audience, discussing the origins of hospice, its relative youth in the United States, and how its holistic approach utilizing the skills of chaplains, social workers, and traditional medical practitioners ease end-of-life pain and prepares the patient and patient’s family for the inevitable. He will the regulatory overlay governing hospice and how this state and federal overlay ideally ensures a high-quality experience for patients and families.\n \nOur Director of Nursing, Sheril John, will attend to meet and greet, and, after I speak, to answer questions along with me. Sheril John, RN, combines great compassion with strong entrepreneurial spirit and insightful business acumen. Ms. John was a neuro-oncology nurse at Medical City, Dallas for close to twenty years. While at Medical City about 15 years ago, she started her own home health agency, which she successfully operates to this day. Together with Matt Sawyer, she started Shalem Hospice Care, LLC in 2017.
