TOPIC: Special Needs Trusts

Tresi Moore Weeks will speak on recent developments in Special Needs Trusts.  After a brief overview of government benefits and special needs trusts, Tresi will help estate planning and probate attorneys understand how child support can cause an adult child with disabilities to lose Medicaid/SSI and how to avoid disqualification; the income tax benefits of leaving IRAs and 401(k)s to Special Needs Trusts; and recent changes and risks involving ABLE Accounts, which allows a person with disabilities to save money with out affecting their government benefits.  Tresi will also cover how attorneys drafting to minimize estate tax my unwittingly cause the loss of government benefits of a beneficiary with disabilities and how to avoid these problems.
